The Calaboose Jail
The Wheels of Justice
Single red Building on Court Street
When times were simpler, the City of Greensboro used this small brick building as the City Hall, to both conduct town business and to police the local citizens.
Now and then, a resident or visitor would be caught in a small act against the law and would need to be brought to City Hall to discuss the problem before a magistrate. Other more pressing business might require the accused to wait a bit for justice to be administered.
Since space in the small City Hall was at a premium, a Calaboose Jail was constructed as a temporary holding spot to confine miscreants. The Jail was only roomy enough for one or two people to stand upright and it resembled a cage, with a strong lock on the door. If one of the building’s two rooms was needed for a meeting about important town business, the detainees could easily be moved to the other area because the Greensboro Calaboose Jail was equipped with sturdy wheels.
