Charlie Poulas
Charlie and the City Café
Today home of The Herald Journal
Charlie Poulas was a Greek immigrant who arrived at Ellis Island in New York. He sold apples on trains and made his way to Greensboro. With hard work, he became a successful businessman.
He owned and ran the City Café, where many people ate after church and enjoyed meals throughout the week. In the back was a pool hall, separated from the dining area. Charlie ran a very tight ship in the pool hall. Decorum held forth as he demanded that there be no profanity or untoward behavior. Young men were not allowed to play until they had reached a certain age.
Charlie installed a bowling alley in the basement during the 1940’s—quite a boon to the young people of Greensboro, hungry for entertainment.
Charlie made periodic trips back to Greece, visiting and financially helping his relatives. He owned farm lands on the Lick Skillet Road and died there. He is buried in the Greensboro Cemetery.
