The museum was made possible through the dedication and tireless work of founder and director Mamie Hillman. Since opening, it has continued to grow, welcoming visitors and expanding its impact throughout the community. The Museum The museum’s galleries explore different periods of African American life in Greene County. An additional rotating gallery highlights important aspects of local history, including education, health care, art, and culture. Civic Engagement The museum proudly initiated the call to honor and recognize the legacy of Georgia’s “Original 33”—African American legislators who were elected to state office in 1868 but later expelled because of their race.
