The Copelan Corner

Guarded by the Iron Indian

Genuine Georgia sits at the corner of the Copelan Building, built in 1889 by E. A. Copelan.  The large brick building is embellished with architectural ornamentation, commemorating the rich history of the area.  The Iron Indian masks are a tribute to local Native American heritage that can be traced back to prehistoric times.  Copelan originally built the building as a bank and the former vault may be identified at the back of the restaurant.  It is currently used for storage.

Over the years, the building was subdivided and this corner became The Chandler Pharmacy, one of three Greensboro pharmacies at the turn of the century.  Coca Cola was introduced to Greensboro here and often mixed with flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, cherry, and orange (called “orange dope” at the time).  Luann Landon, great granddaughter of Mr. Copelan wrote the book Dinner at Miss Lady’s, about her childhood memories of Greensboro.
