Greene County African American Museum
The Greene County African American Museum opened its doors on October 16, 2021, with a mission to preserve and share the often-untold stories of African Americans from Greene County. The museum was made possible through the dedication and tireless work of founder and director Mamie Hillman. Since opening, it has continued to grow, welcoming visitors and expanding its impact throughout the community.
The Museum
The museum’s galleries explore different periods of African American life in Greene County. An additional rotating gallery highlights important aspects of local history, including education, health care, art, and culture.
Civic Engagement
The museum proudly initiated the call to honor and recognize the legacy of Georgia’s “Original 33”—African American legislators who were elected to state office in 1868 but later expelled because of their race.
Following a successful candlelight vigil and dinner in September 2023, the museum remains dedicated to sharing their legacy, along with the stories of many other African American civic leaders who helped shape Greene County and the state of Georgia.

Museum tours are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. by appointment only.
